Top AI/ML Fellowship For Indian Students – Analytics India Magazine

Companies and education institutes around the world are investing in nurturing talents in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Here in this article, we list some of the prestigious fellowship programs in the field of AI and machine learning, in no particular order, for consideration of Indian students.

IIT Madras

The Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (RBCDSAI) under IIT Madras offers a Post-Baccalaureate Fellowship Program for AI and machine learning enthusiasts. Selected candidates undergo two year-internship and receive a stipend that varies between ₹40,000-60,000 per month.

Selected candidates get an opportunity to work on a range of research topics including deep learning, theoretical machine learning, NLP, explainability in AI, IoT and smart cities, and financial analytics. Further, they receive access to high-performing CPUs/GPUs, a funded trip to national conferences, among other privileges.

This fellowship was founded in 2017. The eligibility criterion is that the aspirant must have graduated from a full-time bachelors course in the last two years.

Microsoft Research India

Microsoft Research India, offers a Research Fellows program for students interested in research, engineering, and entrepreneurship by exposing them to world-class and state-of-the-art technology. Selected candidates undergo a fellowship program that extends from one to two years. There is a range of areas which fellows can explore, including, but not limited to deep theoretical problems, innovations in AI, designing new programming languages, prototyping communication and sensing hardware, optimising database queries, and building software systems, etc. 

They contribute to several aspects of the research lifecycle, spanning ideation, implementation, evaluation, and deployment. Former MSR fellows have successfully joined top PhD programs in leading universities such as MIT, Stanford, and UC Berkeley; others have established organisations such as Everwell, Ola, and Capillary.

Eligible candidates must be required to have completed a bachelor’s degree (BS/BE/BTech) or master’s (MS/ME/MTech) in computer science or related areas. The selection process takes into consideration academic performance, development skills, aptitude for research and software development. The stipend and benefits extended to a candidate varies based on the nature of fellowship.

Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship

This fellowship is presented by Qualcomm Technologies Inc., which is open to selected Indian universities, including IITs and IISc. Each winning team, consisting of two students, and a faculty receives a financial award of up to ₹10 lakh along with the assignment of a Qualcomm researcher for mentoring to facilitate close interaction with Qualcomm. The team should have at least one student enrolled as masters, dual degree or PhD in electrical engineering or computer science department. This funding is also eligible for annual renewal for one ‘super winner’ team.

The teams can present their ideas across a range of topics, as per latest 2020 guidelines, including advanced semiconductor, advances in communication techniques and theory, autonomous driving, multimedia computing, processor architecture and implementation, secure system design, semiconductor test, quality and yield learning, and machine learning.

Speaking particularly of machine learning, interested teams can submit their research proposal in one of the following areas — Natural language processing, computer vision, reinforcement and continual learning, on-device training, deep generative modelling and unsupervised learning, and Bayesian deep learning and uncertainty estimation, among others.

This fellowship was founded in 2009 and introduced in India in 2016.

Kohli Research Fellowship Program

The Kohli Research Fellowship Program is a fellowship program offered at the Kohli Center on Intelligent Systems (KCIS), IIIT Hyderabad. It was established in 2015 in association with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Foundation to facilitate research, teaching, and entrepreneurship in the areas of intelligent systems. 

Eligible candidates hold a B.Tech/B.E/M.Tech/M.E/MSc in foundational sciences. Apart from this, candidates must demonstrate a proven track record in research that showcases their aptitude and scholarly abilities and an interest to work in the areas of AI aligned with KCIS. For selection, aspirants must take IIIT-H’s regular Post Graduate Entrance Examination and subsequent interview process.

Selected candidates are eligible for a stipend of ₹50,000 per month for four years or submission of the thesis, whichever happens first. This fellowship also supports travel to top conference forums.

Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence

Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence is a Mumbai-headquartered independent, non-profit institute that concentrates on developing AI solutions for the developmental sector. Their mission is to apply AI-based innovations to a range of societal domains, including healthcare, agriculture, education, and infrastructure.

Every year, the institute invites applications for ‘Innovation fellow’. Eligible candidates must have one to five years of experience in the innovation-focused role and must possess strong problem solving and analytical skills. Selected candidates work closely with external partners such as government agencies, corporates, and non-profits and internal teams spanning research, engineering, and product management.
