The Defense Innovation Unit is looking for a suite of sensors, artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms for locating, detecting and determining hazardous objects, conditions or degradation on surfaces.
DIU said the Department of Defense and the civil aviation industry have experienced increasing costs due to foreign object debris on airfields and sought to know the causes of FOD events to mitigate it.
The unit envisions the platform to operate in any time or weather condition and communicate with a centralized management suite provided by the government to assist in processing and consolidation processes.
The platform is required to have a low probability of false alarm, cover an airfield-sized surface area and examine various activities, obstructions and conditions. The agency also eyes the suite’s AI and ML algorithms to employ sensor-generated information to localize and classify objects.
Potential contractors will work with a commercial integrator to build applicable interface control documents for the suite.
Responses to the notice are due Nov. 22.
